Vomit Green

Only drew the right half of this shape. And today's color is vomit green because I got really sick over the weekend thanks to a fever that's been spreading around at work.

But there's another reason I chose that color.

Thanks to being sick with fever, I've been in bed studying perspective from an architectural drawing textbook that I bought from Barnes & Nobles for about $70 a while back. Only now, after collecting dust in storage for a year, when I'm finally ready to get my money's worth by absorbing all the book nutrients from this mini bitch slap to my wallet, do I discover that it is currently half off on Amazon.com:

Another Study

A Before/After study of two shapes combined together. Sorta aiming for that airplane thingy embedded in the wing, whatever it's called. Engine fuselage?

It may not be exciting to look at, but I'm enjoying these curved form studies, something I used to avoid due to the time consuming, mood killing, technical perspective setup usually involved with drawing complex shapes.

A lot of artists avoid this stuff for similar reasons, even many professional comic book artists. If you look through some comics most of the artwork is limited to boxy, squarish shapes, or copied from photos, or faked.

While drawing curved forms can seem VERY HARD, knowing a few shockingly SIMPLE techniques make it quick, fun, and EASY. With so many artists in the dark, I thought this stuff HAD to be hard, requiring immense talent and patience.

Turns out artists with a clue have been keeping secrets from the rest of us. Man was I fooled.

Now I can accurately construct any curvy shape from imagination using freehand perspective. I'm loving this! I should do a tutorial some time.

Eventually I'll post artwork that's actually fun to look at. Maybe an airplane/spaceship or something.

In the meantime, pardon me while I jump for joy.

Cursing My Fair Lady

Some caricature and cartoony style doodles. I kinda like the male faces, especially since they only took about 1 to 5 minutes each, but oh my god the girl took over an hour, and I still don't like it. The body was a proportion experiment, but looks like a train wreck, and once again Audrey Hepburn's likeness creeps into the face despite my best efforts. Gotta channel another actress, cuz it's driving me crazy. Damn you "My Fair Lady", damn youuu!!

I've been studying Marc Davis lately, the best "girl" artist of Disney's nine old men, so this drawing has a Tinkerbellish look to her, especially with that green background and hairstyle, but I drew it from scratch, no references, no copying, just the subconscious playing tricks on me. Still, I'm not complaining, my warmup drawing had me thinking that today might be a really really REALLY bad drawing day:

Learning how to draw smooth flowing lines, while adding variety to the line widths is HAAARD. Mainly drawing from my shoulder instead of my wrist, which feels unnatural, but there's a definite improvement in my line quality. Guess I have to practice a lot more before it feels right.

Also another stick figure dance just to take up space.

Figure Drawing

Figure drawing is easily my worst subject. My area of expertise is faces, which I love creating, but they need bodies attached to them or it looks kinda weird. So with that in mind I spent most of July studying anatomy, and last week switched to gesture drawing. Here are the very first two gesture drawings I ever did using the Vilppu technique(1 week ago):

4 days and 30 gesture drawings later I'm already seeing improvement:

Figure drawing doesn't naturally spring from a well of creativity and talent, it's a very technical process. In other words, I think anyone can draw competent figures if they study the right techniques. Vilppu has it down to a science.

Here's one I did today:

It took about 10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of critique. As you can see by my notes it's heavy on analysis and calculation. Except poopy time. That's why it looks like crap, but eventually I should be doing some really cool stuff with these bodies. Just need more practice.
